2010. Augusztus 13.-án, pénteken, az előfutamokkal megkezdődtek a versenyek a 11. Evezős Egyetemi Világbajnokságon, Szegeden. A versenyzőket erős toló szél és nap sütés várta, amit csak a délután során tartott reményfutamok alatt zavart meg egy enyhítő zápor. 

A futamok és a délutáni edzések után a verseny megnyitó ünnepségére a Szegedi Tudomány Egyetemen került sor. A csapatok a Széchenyi térről sétáltak a megnyitó helyszínére a szegedi dobosok által diktált ritmusra. A csapatokat a városiak tapssal, integetéssel köszöntötték. 

Az ünnepségen a himnusz nyitó szólamai és a csapatok bemutatása  után a Dr. Prof. Szabó Gábor SZTE rektora, Dr. Vincze Pál a MEFS megbízott elnöke, Verena Burk a FISU képviselője köszöntötte a sportolókat, majd a Dr. Szentgyörgyi Pál Szeged alpolgármestere megnyitotta a világbajnokságot. A versenyzők esküjét Szabó Katalin, míg a bírók esküjét Mike Williams mondta el. Az ünnepséget a Borica táncegyüttes néptánc bemutatója és a Shadows hip-hop dance csoport hiphop bemutatója zárta.

The 11th World Rowing University Championships, held in Szeged, Hungary, began with the heats and repechages on the 13th of August, 2010. The competitors were welcome by strong tail wind and sunshine, which was interrupted only during the repechages with a short, cooling rain.

After the races, the opening ceremony was held on the University of Szeged. The teams walked from Széchenyi square to the location of the opening ceremony, through the city, with the sound of the Szeged drummers leading the way. The teams were greeted with claps, cheering and hand waving coming from the local people. 

At the ceremony after the Hungarian National Anthem, the teams were greeted by Dr. Prof. Szabó Gábor Rector of the University of Szeged, by Dr. Vincze Pál Assigned President of the Hungarian University Sport Federation, Verena Burk the FISU Assessor greeted the competitors. After this Dr. Szentgyörgyi Pál, vice mayor of Szeged opened the World Championships. Katalin Szabó of Hungary read the oath of the competitors and Mike Williams of the umpires. The ceremony was closed with the show of the Borica dance groups folkdance show, and with the Shadows hip-hop dance groups hip-hop show.
